Brussels (Belgium) 21 May 2025 (SPS) – Addressing the 3rd African Union-European Union Ministerial Meeting held today in Brussels, the Sahrawi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Yeslem Beisat, emphacized the indivisibility of peace, justice, and development, in a speech he delivered Today before the meeting.
In a speech that resonated with themes of equity and international legality, Mr. Beisat emphasized that “no development, trade, or prosperity could be achieved without peace and security… the only way to peace is justice.”
Mr. Beisat began by thanking the European Union for its hospitality and praised the leadership of the EU and AU, particularly acknowledging Angolan Foreign Minister Tete António and EU High Representative Kaja Kallas for their efforts in steering the ministerial dialogue. Highlighting the meeting’s theme of peace and security, the Foreign Minister urged the international community to reaffirm its commitment to principles rooted in fairness and respect.
The Sahrawi diplomat called on both the African and European partners to be guided by “principles of equity, respect, and mutual understanding,” adding that genuine peace will only be achieved through collective efforts anchored in law and justice.
Citing the vital role of legal institutions, Mr. Beisat concluded by paying tribute to the European Court of Justice and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, stating that they have “once again reminded us all of the cardinal importance of scrupulous respect for international law and justice.”
In the days leading up to today’s ministerial meeting, a senior Sahrawi delegation participated in key preparatory sessions aimed at harmonizing African and European positions. On 19 and 20 May, Ambassadors Mansour Omar, Lamin Baali, and Malainin Muftah actively contributed to discussions held at the AU Mission in Brussels and during joint AU-EU ambassadorial meetings.
These meetings were critical in refining the draft joint communiqué and ensuring African unity on the summit’s strategic agenda, which includes security, multilateral cooperation, trade, and mobility. The Sahrawi representatives emphasized the importance of a principled African stance that upholds the Union’s legal frameworks and founding values.
The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic’s engagement in these diplomatic processes underscores its steadfast role within the African Union and its contribution to shaping continental consensus. As a founding AU member, the Sahrawi Republic continues to assert its presence on issues of regional peace, justice, and sovereignty in the evolving Africa-Europe partnership. (SPS)
