Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) 15 April 2025 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is participating with a ministerial delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beisat, in the 24th extraordinary session of the Executive Council of the African Union, which began on the morning of Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Sahrawi delegation includes the Sahrawi Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union, Lamine Baali, as well as the Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Malainin Lakhal.
The extraordinary session is being held in the Mandela Hall at the AU headquarters, with the participation of foreign ministers from all 55-member states. The session focuses on crucial matters related to strengthening the institutional structure of the African Union, particularly through the completion of leadership elections in several bodies.
The first stage of the meeting was dedicated to completing the election of the North Africa region’s representative to the AU Peace and Security Council—a seat contested by the two brotherly countries, Algeria and Libya. Algeria won the seat with 34 votes against Libya’s 15, a step that further strengthens Algeria’s leading role in issues of peace and stability across the continent.
In a related context, the Executive Council is also discussing several key items in closed sessions, including the appointment of a member to the African Union's International Law Commission and the appointment of a member to the African Space Council.
Additionally, the Council is reviewing reports concerning the election of two commissioners to the AU Executive Committee, based on recommendations from the Panel of the Wise and the Bureau of the Executive Council.
The participation of the Sahrawi delegation, under the leadership of the newly appointed Foreign Minister, represents an opportunity to reaffirm the Sahrawi Republic’s commitment to the principles of the African Union and its active contribution to decisive continental decisions, as a genuine partner in building a unified, stable, and just Africa.
