Algiers, 11 April 2025 (SPS) - The Algerian People’s National Assembly (Lower House of Parliament) reaffirmed in a statement that that the solution to the Sahrawi cause lies in respecting the settlement plan agreed upon by the Polisario Front and Morocco in 1991 and under which the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) was created.
“The solution lies in respecting the settlement plan agreed between the two parties in 1991, under the auspices of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) (currently African Union) and the United Nations, unanimously adopted by the Security Council and under which MINURSO was created on the basis of the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.”
The statement added that the Assembly followed with “deep regret” the content of the US State Department’s press release that “supports Morocco’s expansionist position against the Sahrawi Arab Republic and with no cohesion whatsoever with previous American positions based on the values of peace, freedom, justice and the right of peoples to self-determination.”
This position “goes against international legality enshrined in the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly, the Security Council, and the decisions and provisions of international, African and European legal bodies.”
The decisions and provisions confirm “the legal character of this issue as a decolonization issue, in accordance with resolution 1514 of the 15th General Assembly on granting independence to colonized countries and peoples, which confirms in its content that the submission of peoples to foreign oppression, to its authority and its exploitation constitutes a denial of fundamental human rights and goes against the United Nations charter, and hinders global cooperation and peace issues.”
