San Pedro Sula (Honduras), 22 February 2025 (SPS) – The President of the Mexican Senate, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, reaffirmed Thursday his solidarity and support for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
In his speech at the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the Forum of Legislative Authorities of Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico, held in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, the President of the Mexican Senate stated: "I would like to clearly and frankly express my solidarity and support for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic."
He added, "It seems to me that efforts should be made to achieve respect for the sovereignty of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic."
During his reception of the President of the National Council, Hamma Salama, at the Mexican Senate, Gerardo Fernández Noroña emphasized that bilateral relations between the two countries have strengthened since 1979, allowing Mexico to uphold the fundamental principles of its foreign policy, such as the self-determination of peoples. He highlighted, "Mexico has always been a defender of the principles of self-determination and respect for the sovereignty and independence of peoples."
On another note, the President of the Mexican Senate, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, during his reception of the Sahrawi Republic's Ambassador to Mexico, Mokhtar Lebihi, reiterated Mexico's historical position in support of the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination. He affirmed that the sovereignty of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is a fundamental principle of Mexican foreign policy.
