New York (UN), 2 October 2026 (SPS) - Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, Representative of the POLISARIO Front to the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, reaffirmed that the basis for a just and lasting solution to the Western Sahara conflict lies in guaranteeing the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination and independence through a free and transparent referendum.
In an interview with the Sahrawi Press Service (SPS), the Sahrawi diplomat praised the strong support for the national cause expressed during the General Debate of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly. He noted that the UN Secretary-General reaffirmed in his latest report that relevant UN committees continue to address Western Sahara strictly as a decolonization issue.
Regarding the recent meeting between a Sahrawi delegation and the Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN, Mike Waltz, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar clarified that it forms part of ongoing dialogue with Security Council members and Washington as the penholder on MINURSO. During the meeting, the delegation reiterated the Sahrawi side's commitment to the UN peace process while firmly rejecting any proposals that bypass legitimate Sahrawi aspirations or attempt to legitimize the Moroccan occupation. He added that resolving the refugee situation remains directly linked to ending the military occupation that caused their displacement in 1975.
The UN Security Council is scheduled to hold closed consultations on MINURSO on October 8 under the Presidency of Greece, during which members will receive briefings from Personal Envoy Staffan de Mistura and Special Representative Alexander Ivanko.
