Algiers, 18 February 2025 (SPS) – The visit of a member of the French government to Western Sahara is of particular gravity and reflects a "blatant disregard for international legality" on the part of a permanent member of the Security Council, stated a Tuesday press release from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs.
"The visit of a member of the French government to Western Sahara is of particular gravity. It is condemnable on multiple levels. It reflects a blatant disregard for international legality by a permanent member of the Security Council," the statement read.
"It contributes to the consolidation of the Moroccan fait accompli in Western Sahara, a territory where the decolonization process remains incomplete and where the exercise of the right to self-determination remains unfulfilled," the statement added.
Finally, "the ill-advised visit of the French government member conveys the detestable image of a former colonial power standing in solidarity with a new one. In doing so, the French government further disqualifies itself and isolates itself from the United Nations' efforts to expedite a resolution to the Western Sahara conflict based on strict respect for international legality," the statement concluded.
