Oviedo (Asturias), February 17, 2025 (SPS) - The 28th Conference of Parliamentary Groups "Peace and Freedom for the Sahrawi People" concluded its activities today, Monday, in the province of Asturias, reaffirming its commitment to stand by the Sahrawi people until they achieve freedom and self-determination.

The conference expressed its rejection of the position of the Spanish Prime Minister regarding Western Sahara, reiterating that the Polisario Front is the legitimate and sole representative of the Sahrawi people.

At the conclusion of the conference, the parliamentarians emphasized the need to respect the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people, including their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

The conference focused its deliberations on key issues related to the struggle of the Sahrawi people, particularly the grave human rights violations faced by Sahrawis in the occupied territories. The parliamentary groups called on the international community to monitor the human rights situation and demanded the immediate release of all Sahrawi prisoners, especially those of Gdeim Izik.

The conference urged the United Nations to expand the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to include monitoring and protecting human rights in the occupied territories. In the same context, it called on the European Union to ensure respect for human rights in its agreements with Morocco.

The conference also highlighted the recent rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union, which annulled the EU-Morocco Association and Fisheries Agreements, stating that these agreements did not respect the rights of the Sahrawi people.

The conference called on the European Commission to engage in direct negotiations with the Polisario Front, the legitimate and sole representative of the Sahrawi people, to ensure economic justice in the region.

Regarding the humanitarian situation, the conference reaffirmed its commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to the Sahrawi people in the refugee camps and occupied territories, with the aim of strengthening their institutions.

The parliamentary groups also renewed their support for the "Holidays in Peace" and "School Project" programs, which symbolize solidarity between Spanish society and the Sahrawi people.

The conference called on the media and civil society to continue shedding light on the Sahrawi people and their just cause.
