Djiboutian Mahmoud Ali Youssouf elected president of African Union Commission

Addis Abeba, 15 February 2025 (SPS) - Djiboutian Mahmoud Ali Youssouf was elected on Saturday in Addis Ababa as the President of the African Union (AU) Commission.

Mahmoud Ali Youssouf received 33 votes, achieving the two-thirds majority required during the annual summit of the pan-African organization. He succeeds Chadian Moussa Faki Mahamat, who reached the limit of two terms set by AU regulations.

A Djiboutian Foreign Minister since 2005, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf aims to strengthen governance, democracy, and institutional capacities of the AU, promote peace and security, stimulate economic and social development, develop infrastructure, undertake bold transitions in response to environmental challenges, support youth and employment, promote gender equality and the African diaspora, and enhance Africa's position on the global stage.
