Addis Ababa, 13 February 2025 (SPS) - Why all this discomfort and this embarrassing attempt to hide what everyone already knows? Morocco was a candidate for membership of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council and received a resounding slap from Algeria! Algeria secured 30 votes in the sixth round, while Morocco gathered only 17 votes, most obtained through lavish, unabashed bribery.
The issue of Moroccan bribery has taken center stage in AU hallways lately, with numerous member state representatives openly voicing their scorn and revulsion toward these practices, using every negative descriptor imaginable.
Morocco, like other countries within the continental organization, no longer defends political cases, no longer advocates for legitimate claims, nor respectable diplomatic objectives to draw attention. These have all vanished, and its only concern, despite yielding neither results nor benefits, has become obstructing Algeria's efforts and challenging its approaches and initiatives that serve the joint African action.
Indeed, Morocco's only obsession within the continental organization is to slow down Algeria's strong standing in Africa and making desperate, repeatedly failed attempts to prevent Algeria from taking leadership positions in the AU, while also trying to drive wedges between unified African ranks. These efforts have only resulted in one defeat after another for Morocco.
Most African nations have now seen through Morocco's deceptions and obvious scheming. Even its loyal supporters who backed its ventures are gradually breaking away, contributing to a growing and unprecedented wave of rejection. Tomorrow will be another day.
