Death of former German President Horst Koehler

Berlin, February 1, 2025 (SPS) - Former German President Horst Koehler, who held office from 2004 to 2010, passed away on Saturday at the age of 81 "after a brief and serious illness," announced the German presidency.

Horst Koehler "died early this morning in Berlin," "after a brief and serious illness," "surrounded by his family," the German presidency specified.

Horst Koehler was appointed as the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Western Sahara in 2017, succeeding Christopher Ross, as part of the UN efforts to revive negotiations between the Polisario Front and Morocco, after a five-year freeze. However, he submitted his resignation in 2019.
