Brussels, January 31, 2025 (SPS) - Belgium's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bernard Quintin, reaffirmed his country's full support for the political process led by the United Nations aimed at achieving a fair, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political solution for Western Sahara, which is occupied by Morocco.
"The current Belgian government's position regarding Western Sahara is well-known and has already been expressed by my predecessor in 2022 as well as by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (...) Belgium provides its full support for the process led by the United Nations for a fair, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political solution for all parties," the Belgian foreign minister stated in a press conference on Thursday.
Furthermore, Mr. Quintin recalled the exclusivity of the UN in the political process, reiterating Brussels' support for "resolution 2703 of the United Nations Security Council, which noted the role and responsibility of the parties in the search for a realistic, pragmatic, lasting and compromise-based political solution."
Western Sahara is considered by the UN as a non-self-governing territory, with its final status to be determined by a referendum to be organized by the United Nations Mission for the Organization of a Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
