Occupied El Aaiun, 29 January 2025 (SPS) - The "Sun of Freedom" organization for the protection of Sahrawi human rights defenders has issued a report highlighting the deterioration of human rights in the occupied Sahrawi territories and revealing the ongoing crimes of the Moroccan occupation and its repressive policies against the Sahrawi people.
The organization emphasized in its annual report for 2024 the Moroccan violations against Sahrawi civilians, which have escalated, notably including torture leading to death. On November 13, the Sahrawi citizen Omar Bahia Abdelmajid died as a result of torture during his detention by the Moroccan police.
The Moroccan occupation continued its assaults on properties and lands through demolition and destruction policies, destroying homes of Sahrawis in several cities, including the occupied El Aaiun and Boujdour. These areas also witnessed forced displacement operations in February and August of the past year.
Furthermore, the occupying authorities continued to violate human rights in the occupied Sahrawi territories by restricting freedom of movement and imposing severe restrictions on Sahrawis and human rights defenders, preventing them from moving freely within and outside the occupied cities. Many were subjected to arbitrary detention and expulsion by the occupying forces.
Sahrawis, especially journalists and human rights activists, faced numerous violations while organizing peaceful protests and demonstrations, and they were denied their right to peaceful assembly, which constitutes a blatant violation of human rights, according to the report.
