Boujdour (Refugee Camps), 7 January 2025 (SPS) - Swedish environmental and climate activist Greta Thunberg said Monday evening in the wilaya of Boujdour , Sahrawi refugee camps, "It is shameful for the world to ignore the just cause of the Sahrawi people."
In a statement to the Algerian News Agency (APS) on the sidelines of the International Conference in Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, the Swedish activist expressed her "deep regret for the silence prevailing among many countries regarding the Sahrawi issue, as well as the Palestinian issue and the genocide faced by the Palestinian people." She added that the same situation applies to the Sahrawi people, who have suffered for years due to their deprivation of returning to their land and the violations occurring in large parts of the territories occupied by Morocco.
Thunberg called on global media and international institutions related to this issue "to participate in one way or another to achieve justice and hold Morocco accountable for the crimes it commits against the defenseless Sahrawi people."
She further stated, "We all must stand by the Sahrawi people in light of the global climate crisis that negatively affects current and future generations, a situation for which the Sahrawis are not to blame." She also urged the Sahrawis to "make their voices heard in the struggle for climate justice."
It is worth noting that the ongoing International Conference in Solidarity with the Sahrawi People at the Boujdour refugee camp witnesses the participation of human rights advocates and supporters from 13 countries across different continents.
