New York (United Nations), January 3, 2024 (SPS) - Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mr. Amar Ben Jamaa, reiterated Algeria's support for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination in accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions.
In a statement following Algeria's assumption of the presidency of the United Nations Security Council, Ben Jamaa stressed that this is a matter of decolonization that is a priority for Algeria, Africa, and the United Nations, reminding that a meeting on Western Sahara is scheduled for April at the United Nations level.
He said that "Algeria, as a member of the international community and the Security Council, will participate in this meeting and advocate for the implementation of a peaceful solution in line with UN resolution 1514 (Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples) and the aspirations of the Sahrawi people, as well as their right to self-determination."
He added, "The Security Council renewed, three months ago, the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), which will continue until its conclusion."
