Algiers, 31 December 2024 (SPS) -  Algeria assumes, as of Wednesday, the presidency of the UN Security Council for January, a presidency it intends to use to continue making the voice of Arab and African countries heard while advocating for just causes.

One year after its election as a non-permanent member of this UN body, Algeria will take over the Security Council presidency for one month, focusing particularly on the situation in the Middle East, especially in occupied Palestine as well as counter-terrorism efforts in Africa.

Algeria plans, in this capacity, to organize the Council’s quarterly open debate at the ministerial level on “The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to participate in this event.
