Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), November 27, 2024 (SPS) – The Union of Students of Saguia Al-Hamra and Río de Oro (UESARIO) has been accepted as a full member of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of the African Union (ECOSOCC), an important continental organization that brings together social organizations and groups for development.
In a statement released on the occasion, the Sahrawi student organization described this recognition as a "historic achievement that reflects the strategic African dimension of the Sahrawi state and reaffirms the African Union's commitment to defending the struggles for national liberation of its peoples."
The Sahrawi Student Union had submitted an official application to join the ECOSOCC body of the African Union, and its application underwent a thorough review by the competent authorities, who confirmed that all conditions stipulated in the membership application rules were met.
The ECOSOCC is regarded as one of the most important advisory bodies of the African Union, working to ensure that the voices of civil society organizations are represented within the structures of the African Union and providing them with the opportunity to influence decision-making processes. It also serves as a vital platform for exchanging ideas and initiatives that contribute to achieving the goals of the African continent, including continental integration, sustainable development, and social justice.
