New York (United Nations), October 2, 2024 (SPS) – The Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, held a bilateral meeting with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Mr. Staffan de Mistura, indicated a communiqué of the Algerian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
The statement mentioned that the discussions centered around efforts to revive the political process aimed at reaching a political solution that ensures the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, in anticipation of the Security Council's deliberation on the Sahrawi issue during October.
In this regard, the same source indicated that Mr. Attaf affirmed to the UN envoy that Algeria, from its legal standpoint as an observer state in the decolonization process in Western Sahara, believes that any serious endeavor to resolve the Sahrawi issue should be based on four pillars. The first pillar is rooted in the UN's principle that "the Western Sahara issue is a decolonization issue."
The second pillar is based on the understanding that "since it is a decolonization issue, resolving the Western Sahara question is contingent upon enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination." The third pillar asserts that "the autonomy plan advocated by Morocco cannot constitute a solution to the Western Sahara issue because it contradicts the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination."
According to the same statement, the fourth pillar is based on the understanding that "the conflict in Western Sahara can only be resolved through direct negotiations between the two parties to this conflict, namely the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front."
