New York (UN) September 30, 2024 (SPS) - In his speech before the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, reiterated his country's firm position for the decolonization of Western Sahara, stressing the need to end the last chapter of colonialism in the region and reject Moroccan maneuvers aimed at distorting the facts and buying time.
In his address, the Algerian official addressed the regional situation in North Africa, affirming that "Algeria aspires to the complete decolonization of Western Sahara," and considering this issue to be the last chapter of colonialism in Africa that must be brought to a definitive end.
The head of Algerian diplomacy expressed his country's support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General and his personal envoy, within the framework of enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their legitimate right to self-determination.
On the other hand, the Algerian Minister clarified that his country believes that "attempts to perpetuate the colonial status quo through buying time, falsifying irrefutable facts, and intensifying desperate maneuvers to divert attention" are doomed to fail. He reaffirmed Algeria's unwavering support for the inalienable rights of the Sahrawi people, stating that "colonialism is ultimately destined to disappear, sooner or later, and that the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people will prevail."
