Dili (East Timor), August 30, 2024 (SPS) - Mr. Brahim Ghali, President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, was received today, Friday, by Mr. Xanana Gusmão, Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of East Timor.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the latest developments regarding the Sahrawi cause, especially after the resumption of armed struggle following Morocco's violation of the ceasefire agreement on November 13, 2020, as well as prospects for bilateral relations and joint action.

Mr. Gusmão emphasized his personal appreciation and the strong connection of the Timorese people to the Sahrawi cause, noting the historical ties between the two countries and peoples. He stressed the commitment to these distinguished relations and the ongoing support for the Sahrawi people's struggle until they achieve their legitimate goals of freedom and independence.

The Sahrawi president, for his part, thanked his host for the warm welcome and strong solidarity, congratulating him on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the self-determination referendum. He reminded that the Sahrawi people is still awaiting a similar opportunity, as a natural right guaranteed by the United Nations Charter and resolutions, especially since their case is very similar to that of the East Timorese people, representing an unfinished decolonization process due to the military occupation by a neighboring state, Morocco

At the end of the meeting, the President made a statement to the Timorese and international media present, expressing his satisfaction with the friendly and candid meeting, which reflected a convergence of views on various issues discussed. He also renewed his thanks for the invitation he received from Timorese President Ramos Horta to participate in the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the self-determination referendum in East Timor.

The Sahrawi president was accompanied by Abdati Abreika, advisor to the presidency, and Aba Malainin, ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic in East Timor.
