Addis Ababa (African Union) 07 August 2024 (SPS)- The Permanent Representative of the Sahrawi Republic to the African Union, Lamin Baali, in his capacity as Dean of the Northern African region, submitted the files of the region's candidates for the position of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union, whose election is scheduled to take place during the Union’s Summit in February 2025.
In this context, the Dean of the Northern Region deposited the files of the candidates of Algeria, Egypt, Libya and Morocco after these countries had previously submitted their candidates' files to the deanship, which in accordance with the rules of the Union handed them over to the Office of the Legal Counsel of the African Union, represented by Ambassador Mohamed Salem Khalil and a group of his office staff.
Besides the Dean of the region, this official ceremony was attended by diplomats representing the embassies of Algeria, Egypt and the Sahrawi Republic.
It should be noted that the Deanship had previously submitted the files of the candidates of Algeria on July 31 and Morocco on August 3 The upcoming elections will allow African countries to present candidates for the leadership positions within the Union. Specifically, the position of Chairperson of the Commission will be contested exclusively by Eastern African countries, while the Deputy Chair position is reserved for North African countries.
The remaining positions of the six AU Commissioners will be contested by candidates from the other countries of the remaining three regions of the African Union, with each region competing for two Commissioner posts. Additionally, it is worthy to mention that the Sahrawi Republic has held the position of Dean of the North African region for several years now. The region includes the Sahrawi Republic, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Morocco. (SPS)
