New York (United Nations), 18 April 2024 (SPS) - In  a statement issued today, Dr Sidi Mohamed Omar, Member of the National Secretariat, Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations, and Coordinator with MINURSO, debunked the claims made by the representative of the occupying state of Morocco to the United Nations during the Security Council Debate on “The role of young persons in addressing security challenges in the Mediterranean” held yesterday.

Frente POLISARIO Representation at the United Nations

STATEMENT

[New York, 18 April 2024] In his statement during the Security Council Debate on “The role of young persons in addressing security challenges in the Mediterranean” held yesterday, the representative of the occupying state of Morocco claimed once again that Western Sahara “has been irreversibly recovered in 1975” in addition to other false claims that are not worth commenting on.

This unfounded claim is an insult to everyone’s intelligence and shows clearly that the representative of the occupying state of Morocco has again exceeded all the limits of common sense in his futile attempts to hoodwink UN Member States.

It is well known that the UN General Assembly and its subsidiary bodies continue to address the question of Western Sahara as a decolonisation issue within the scope of Chapter XI of the UN Charter, while reaffirming the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination in accordance with General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) of 14 December 1960 containing the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples.

If Western Sahara had been “irreversibly recovered in 1975”, as claimed by the representative of the occupying state, why then did the occupying state of Morocco decide to partition the Territory and its people with Mauritania by virtue of the “Convention concerning the State frontier line established between the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Kingdom of Morocco”, signed in Rabat on 14 April 1976?

Moreover, if Western Sahara had been “irreversibly recovered in 1975”, why did the Security Council “deplore” the holding of the so-called “green march” in its resolution S/RES/380 of 1975, and why did the General Assembly “deeply deplore the continued occupation of Western Sahara by Morocco” in its resolutions A/RES/34/37 of 1979 and A/RES/35/19 of 1980?

After all, why do the General Assembly and its subsidiary bodies as well as the Security Council remain seized of the question of Western Sahara as “an issue of decolonisation” in the case of the General Assembly and as “a matter of peace and security” in the case of the Security Council as affirmed by the UN Secertary-General in his report (A/78/249) of 27 July 2023 submitted to the 78th Session of the General Assembly?

The representative of the occupying state of Morocco has never been able to answer any of these straightforward questions because they demonstrate, inter alia, the undisputable fact that Morocco is an illegal occupying power of Western Sahara since 1975 in flagrant violation of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the objectives and principles of the Constitutive Act of the African Union.

Indeed, facts are stubborn things, and the baseless claims of the representative of the occupying state of Morocco will never alter this fact.
