Buenos Aires, 24 March 2024 (SPS) - Forty delegates from 25 trade union organizations from Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa have expressed their unconditional support for the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination.
The Congress of the CTA (Autonomous Workers' Central) of Argentina was held on Friday with the participation of 40 delegates from 25 trade union organizations from Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa, as well as the presence of global federations. "This presence is historic, the largest in our organization's 32-year existence," emphasized Adolfo Aguirre, the Secretary of International Relations of the CTA.
The Congress of the CTA concluded with a Declaration that emphasizes "the unity of the global working class and internationalist solidarity." The declaration reaffirms "its unconditional support for the cause of the Sahrawi people and their legitimate right to independence."
The document also highlights that "it is time for the Argentine government to recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), which celebrated its 48th anniversary this year, as more than 80 nations around the world, including 29 from Latin America, already do."
The Declaration also demands that "the United Nations fulfill its obligations, ensure that the Sahrawi people exercise their right to self-determination, and compel the Kingdom of Morocco to cease aggression, repression in the occupied territories, the sentencing of activists without trial, and forced disappearances."
Speaking on behalf of the General Union of Sahrawi Workers (UGTSARIO), Mohamed Ali Ali Salem, the representative of the Polisario Front in Argentina, drew parallels between the struggles of the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples against occupation.
