Santiago de Chile, 13 January 2024 (SPS) - The Chilean Association for Friendship with the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, in a statement, expressed its total condemnation of the election of Morocco as chair of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The Chilean association considered Morocco's election to the presidency of the UN Human Rights Council as contradictory to the issues of human rights and their defense. It clearly reflects the contradictions and hypocrisy of many countries and the United Nations' failure to protect the human rights, economic, and social rights of peoples under colonialism, as is the case with the Sahrawi people.

The Chilean association pointed out in its statement that "Morocco has a terrible record in the field of human rights, and that it "pursues repressive policies and wages a war of extermination against the Sahrawi people" in the occupied territories without the slightest regard for international humanitarian law.

On the other hand, the Sahrawi civil society has previously affirmed that a country like Morocco, which violates basic rights, will never be able to defend human dignity. Therefore, the alleged nomination of Morocco to assume the presidency of the Human Rights Council would be a disregard for the international system and a disregard for the global principles of human rights.
