La Rioja hosts conference in support of Sahrawi people

La Rioja (Spain), 10 May  2021 (SPS) -The participants of the 25th anniversary of the European Parliament Intergroup Peace for the Sahrawi People on Saturday called for the organization of a self-determination referendum to end the conflict in Western Sahara.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the conference took place in one day with in camera working sessions.
Two conferences on the legal and social framework of Western Sahara were held in the morning.
The two conferences were led by members of the Parliament of La Rioja belonging to the Intergroup in which participated lawyers and people involved in the Sahrawi cause.
The two conferences were attended by the professor of international law at the University of La Rioja, Mariola Urrea, the representative of the Polisario Front in Spain, Abdullah Arabi and the president of the Association of Friends of the SADR.
During the second part of the day, meetings were held in camera, bringing together members of national parliamentary inter-groups, members of associations of friends of Western Sahara, members of various committees and Sahrawi delegates from all over Spain.
The report issued after the work of the first session was presented by the president of FEDISSAH, Carmelo Ramirez, in addition to a report from the International Association of Western Saharan Lawyers, Felipe Briones. The report includes five political, social, economic and human rights goals.
During his speech, the FEDISSAH president denounced the brutal harassment of the Sahrawi people by the Moroccan police in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
He also referred to the "intolerable" case of the Sahrawi activist Sultana Khaya and her family, under house arrest in the occupied city of Boudjdor for over four months. (SPS)
