New York (United States), May 10, 2025 (SPS) - The International Committee to Protect Journalists condemned the Moroccan authorities' repression of press freedom and the tightening of the media blockade on occupied Western Sahara, following the expulsion of Italian journalists who were attempting to cover human rights conditions in the occupied territory. The committee views this incident as a confirmation of Morocco's policy to silence independent media.

Regional Director of the committee, Sarah Qaddah, stated that "the expulsion of Italian journalist Matteo Garavoglia and photographer Giovanni Colmoni is further evidence of the repressive media blockade imposed by Morocco on occupied Western Sahara." She urged the occupying authorities to "allow independent media coverage in a region that already suffers from a complete lack of transparency."
