New York (United Nations), 25 January 2025 (SPS) - Dr Sidi Mohamed Omar, Member of the National Secretariat, Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, stressed that Morocco, the occupying state, is a sponsor and exporter of terrorism while it continues to practice state terrorism in the Occupied Territories of the Sahrawi Republic since the beginning of its illegal occupation in October 1975.

The Sahrawi diplomat pointed out, in a statement to Radio Algérie Internationale today, that Morocco, the occupying state, has used methods of ethnic cleansing and genocide against Sahrawi civilians, many of whom were buried alive in mass graves and thrown off from helicopters, in addition to its daily practices of terrorisation, abuse, torture and scorched-earth policy in Occupied Western Sahara.

The Sahrawi diplomat stressed that “when we talk about Morocco, the occupying state, we are talking about a rogue state, a sponsor and exporter of terrorism in our region and beyond. Who among us does not remember the terrorist attacks carried out by nationals from terror-hotbed Morocco in European cities such as Madrid (March 2004), Paris (November 2015), Brussels (March 2016), London (June 2017), Barcelona (August 2017), and Turku in Finland (August 2017), among other places”.

The participation of Moroccan nationals in terrorist groups is an established fact. It was recognised by Moroccan officials themselves including the head of the Moroccan Directorate General for Studies and Documentation who stated before the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee on 30 September 2014 that there were “1203 Moroccan combatants” present in Syria at the time. However, as for the number of Moroccans joining transnational terrorist groups, according to several sources including the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), it is much higher than what Morocco, the occupying state, declares.

The Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO added that all these documented facts prove the involvement of Morocco, the occupying state, in breeding terrorism and supporting transnational terrorist groups that depend on Moroccan cannabis resin (hashish) and other drugs as the main source for financing their terrorist operations in our region and beyond, in addition to its being a source of great threat to the security and stability of the entire region.
