Chahid El-Hafed (Sahrawi Republic) 18 January 2025 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Natural Resources watch (Observatorio Saharaui de Recursos Naturales- OSRN) has strongly condemned the recent attack on the offices of "Global Aktion" in Copenhagen, Denmark, which took place on January 13, 2025.
In a statement to the Sahrawi Press Agency, the SNRW's newly appointed General Coordinator, Ms. Yaguta El-Mokhtar, denounced the assault as "a reprehensible act of aggression, marked by arson and hateful graffiti, constituting a flagrant violation of the principles of justice and international solidarity. This deliberate attack on civil society is a clear attempt to intimidate and silence those advocating for the Sahrawi people's rights."
Ms. Yaguta highlighted the long-standing suffering of the Sahrawi people, stating that "for decades, our people have endured forced displacement and systemic violations of their fundamental rights. This attack on 'Global Aktion' reflects the desperation of those who seek to silence the courageous voices standing for freedom and human dignity."
The attack, which targeted the "Global Aktion" office located on Vesterbro Street in Copenhagen's Norrebro district, involved Molotov cocktails, causing significant property damage. Graffiti at the scene included politically charged messages such as “The Sahara belongs to Morocco” “Stop Supporting Terrorism,” “Morocco,” and “F*ck Polisario,” underscoring the political motivations behind the incident.
Copenhagen police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects and indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances and motives behind the attack.
In a press release, OSRN underscored the critical need for greater international attention to the crisis in Western Sahara. It called on the global community to move beyond mere condemnations and take concrete action to address the root causes of the conflict, ensuring the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination as mandated by UN resolutions on decolonization.
"This attack serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for international focus on Western Sahara," the statement reads. "The global community must not limit its response to verbal denouncements but instead take meaningful steps to tackle the underlying causes of the Sahrawi struggle. Morocco and other actors obstructing the liberation of Africa’s last colony must be held accountable."
The statement concluded with a resolute message: "The Sahrawi people’s pursuit of justice and self-determination will not be derailed by acts of aggression or attempts to intimidate their supporters. The observatory stands in full solidarity with 'Global Aktion' and all organizations committed to advancing human rights, peace, and the principle of self-determination." (SPS)
