Algiers, 8 December 2024 (SPS) - President of Algeria, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and his South African counterpart, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa, reaffirmed their steadfast commitment to supporting the legitimate struggle of the Sahrawi people for self-determination, emphasizing the need to resume direct negotiations between the Polisario Front and Morocco under the auspices of the United Nations.
This came in a joint statement concluding the state visit of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to Algeria and the seventh session of the High-Level Bilateral Cooperation Committee between Algeria and South Africa, held from December 5 to 7, during which they reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Sahrawi people's legitimate struggle for self-determination.
The two presidents also stressed the necessity for the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front to resume direct negotiations under the United Nations' supervision, noting that these negotiations aim to "organize a fair and transparent referendum, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and the African Union."
President of Algeria and his South African counterpart expressed their condemnation of all forms of violations committed by the Moroccan occupier against the Sahrawi people in the occupied territories, including the infringement of human rights and the unlawful exploitation of their natural resources.
