Conference in Australia supports Sahrawi cause and demands end to Moroccan occupation

Melbourne (Australia), October 21, 2024 (SPS) - A conference organized by the Network for Solidarity with the Peoples of Latin America, in collaboration with other solidarity organizations in Australia, took place from October 17 to 20 in Melbourne, in which a Sahrawi delegation participated alongside activists and leaders from various countries.

The conference focused on how to support the struggles and resistance of indigenous peoples and grassroots organizations to achieve a world free of discrimination, domination, and exploitation. It aimed to build bridges of struggle, friendship, and cooperation between indigenous communities and grassroots movements across Latin America, Australia, the Asia-Pacific region, and Africa.

Mohamed Fadel Khamal, the representative of the Polisario Front in Australia, participated in the conference and delivered presentations in workshops on indigenous resistance, sovereignty, and self-determination. He provided an overview of the history of resistance and struggle in Western Sahara and addressed the latest developments in the Sahrawi cause, highlighting the determination of the Sahrawi people to continue their fight for freedom and complete national sovereignty.

Sahrawi activist Gamboura Alameen also gave a lecture in a workshop on the struggles and determination of peoples to fight for a better world. She outlined the aspects of the struggle waged by the Sahrawi people in the occupied territories and in exile for the liberation of their land and the protection of their resources, as well as the harassment and violation of the most basic rights experienced by Sahrawi activists at the hands of the Moroccan occupation regime, which attempts by all means to cover up its human rights violations and plundering of Sahrawi natural resources.

The conference adopted a resolution in which participants expressed their steadfast solidarity and support for the Sahrawi people in their legitimate struggle for freedom and independence. They strongly condemned the continued Moroccan occupation of a significant portion of Western Sahara and denounced the blatant human rights violations in the occupied territories. The conference called for the Moroccan regime to release all Sahrawi political prisoners, particularly the Gdeim Izik group, and demanded an end to the illegal plundering of Sahrawi natural resources by the Moroccan regime and its accomplices.
