Sahrawi civilian prisoner begins open hunger strike

Shaheed Al-Hafed, October 20, 2024 (SPS) - The Sahrawi civilian prisoner within the Gdeim Izik group, Sidi Abdeljalil Kamal Laaroussi, who was unjustly sentenced to life imprisonment, has begun an open hunger strike since Wednesday, October 16, 2024, in the Ibn Sina University Hospital in Rabat, in protest against the lack of hospital conditions and the continuous pressures he is subjected to inside the hospital.

The Association for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners has received several pieces of information from the latter's mother regarding the reasons behind his open hunger strike despite the critical health conditions he has been suffering from for nearly 3 weeks in the hospital.

The Sahrawi Association confirmed that the health conditions of the Sahrawi civilian prisoner Sidi Abdeljalil Kamal Laaroussi, got worst during the first three days of the open hunger strike.

It added that the Sahrawi civilian prisoner insisted providing appropriate treatment conditions and stopping all forms of provocation and deliberate harassment against him and his family, open visits for all family members with proper and humane treatment.

The same source added that Sidi Abdeljalil Kamal Laaroussi, demanded to hold accountable all those responsible and involved in the physical and psychological torture he was subjected to since his kidnapping on December 11, 2010.

He also called on, stated the Sahrawi association, the Secretary-General of the United Nations to intervene urgently to provide protection for him personally and all members of his family due to the blackmail he is subjected to in order to change his political positions.

Sidi Abdeljalil Kamal Laaroussi, called on the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health to exert the necessary pressure on the Moroccan state in order to obtain the necessary treatment and medication.

Finally, he demands the immediate release of all Sahrawi civilian prisoners, especially the Gdeim Izik group, in line with the requirements of the decision of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
