New York (United Nations), 14 March 2024 (SPS) - The representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and the Coordinator with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Sidi Mohammed Omar, met with Rosemary DiCarlo, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, to discuss the present and future of the peace process facilitated by the United Nations in Western Sahara.
During the meeting held on Thursday evening at the United Nations Headquarters, they discussed the present and future of the peace process facilitated by the United Nations in Western Sahara, where the Sahrawi diplomat and member of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front briefed the Under-Secretary-General on the Polisario Front's position regarding the overall issues related to the peace process.
In this context, emphasis was placed on the efforts made by the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, which are still facing obstacles due to the lack of political will on the part of the occupying Moroccan state to progress towards a peaceful, just, and lasting solution, while it continues to rely on a policy of fait accompli to solidify its illegitimate occupation in the occupied Sahrawi territories.
The Polisario Front drew attention through its representative at the United Nations and the Coordinator with MINURSO to the language of blackmail and threats recently used by the occupying Moroccan state towards Staffan de Mistura, which they considered part of the same twisted methods used by the occupying Moroccan state towards previous Personal Envoys of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara, leading most of them to resign for one reason or another.
Under the presidency of Malta, the United Nations Security Council will hold closed consultations on the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) in April, during which Council members will receive briefings from the Secretariat on the efforts of the Personal Envoy and the situation on the ground in the mission's area of responsibility
