Brussels (Belgium), 24 October 2026 (SPS) – The “Sahara Is Not for Sale” Association and the Sahrawi community in Belgium organised a protest rally on Saturday at Place du Luxembourg, outside the European Parliament, demanding the release of all Sahrawi political prisoners and reaffirming the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination, freedom and independence.

Participants condemned Morocco's attempts to consolidate its occupation of Western Sahara and called for respect for international law and the Sahrawi people's right to determine their own future. The demonstration coincided with the upcoming Security Council deliberations on the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

The protest also drew attention to the conditions of Sahrawi civilian prisoners held in Moroccan prisons, particularly the Gdeim Izik group, whose members have launched an open-ended hunger strike in protest against their detention conditions and violations of their fundamental rights.

In his address, a representative of the “Sahara Is Not for Sale” Association stressed the responsibility of the Sahrawi community to defend its people's national rights and rally around their sole legitimate representative, the POLISARIO Front. He paid tribute to the prisoners' struggle for dignity and justice, calling for sustained solidarity, protection of their rights and their release.

He further emphasised that Sahrawi national unity remains essential to the struggle for freedom and independence, describing it as an ongoing collective commitment rather than merely a commemorative occasion or slogan.
