New York (United Nations), 11 October 2026 (SPS) – South Africa has stressed that the principles underpinning the decolonisation agenda must be applied consistently, affirming that the international community cannot adopt a selective approach to peoples’ right to determine their political status and future.
South Africa’s position was expressed during the discussions of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fourth Committee, which deals with Special Political and Decolonisation matters. The South African representative voiced his country’s continued deep concern over the unresolved question of Western Sahara, reaffirming South Africa’s solidarity with the Sahrawi people and its support for their right to self-determination.
The representative underscored that this position reflects South Africa’s longstanding approach to the work of the Fourth Committee and its consistent commitment to self-determination as a fundamental principle of the decolonisation agenda.
South Africa also reiterated its support for renewed United Nations efforts to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that enables the people of Western Sahara to determine their own future.
