Algiers, 4 October 2026 (SPS) - President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria Abdelmadjid Tebboune has reiterated his country’s principled and steadfast support for the just struggle of the Sahrawi people and their inalienable right to self-determination and independence, stressing that the ultimate decision on the Western Sahara issue rests solely with the Sahrawi people.

During his regular media meeting with representatives of the national press, broadcast on Algerian national television and radio channels on Saturday evening, President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to supporting the decisions of the Sahrawi people, stressing that “no one can force the Sahrawi people into a decision that would lead to their elimination,” or impose any ideas against their free will.

In this context, the Algerian president stated that Algeria supports any decision accepted by the Sahrawis and will stand by them in that decision, noting that Algeria’s position has always been clear whenever it has been asked to express it.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune indicated that the two parties to the conflict are currently engaged in negotiations, stressing that the legal and international frameworks governing the issue are clear and established, and that everyone should deal with the Sahrawi people responsibly rather than seek to impose solutions outside that framework.

This clear and renewed Algerian support conveys to the international community Algeria’s determination to continue supporting the Sahrawi people and their cause until they are able to exercise their legitimate right to freedom and independence and achieve a solution that ensures comprehensive peace and stability in the region.
