KAMPALA (Uganda), 2 October 2026 (SPS) – The African Youth Congress has reiterated its strong solidarity with the nine Sahrawi political prisoners from the Gdeim Izik group, who have been on an open-ended hunger strike in Moroccan prisons since September 23, to demand their basic rights and dignity.

In a statement issued by its Secretariat in Kampala, the organization expressed grave concern over the prisoners' deteriorating health and harsh detention conditions, including severe restrictions on family visits and medical care. The Congress urged Moroccan authorities to ensure their safety, transfer them closer to their families in Western Sahara, and implement the rulings of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the UN Committee Against Torture.

Emphasizing Africa’s responsibility, the statement stressed that the continent and the international community cannot remain indifferent to violations against African citizens, calling for urgent humanitarian action to protect their lives and upholding Western Sahara's right to decolonization and self-determination.
