Bir Lehlu (Liberated Territories), September 27, 2026 (SPS) – President of the Sahrawi National Human Rights Commission, Aba Salek El Haisan, sent an urgent letter to Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), drawing attention to the deteriorating situation of Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons.
The letter highlighted the situation of nine Sahrawi political prisoners from the Gdeim Izik group, who have been on an open-ended hunger strike since September 23, 2026, in protest against what the Commission describes as repressive and retaliatory measures and the denial of their basic rights.
The Commission called on the ICRC to urgently visit the prisoners, assess their conditions and intervene to protect them. It also renewed its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all Sahrawi political prisoners, access for international observers and media to the occupied territories of Western Sahara, and clarification of the fate of more than 400 Sahrawi missing persons.
The letter urged the ICRC to exercise its humanitarian mandate under international humanitarian law and the relevant Geneva Conventions to prevent further deterioration of the prisoners’ situation.
