Bir Lehlou (Sahrawi Republic), September 24, 2026 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Government strongly condemned the address delivered by the Moroccan Foreign Minister before the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, describing its content regarding the Western Sahara issue as an attempt to distort facts and misrepresent the legal and political status of the issue.
In a statement issued today, Thursday, the Sahrawi Government stressed that the UN Security Council has not recognized any Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, nor has it stated that the Moroccan proposal constitutes the “sole basis” for a settlement. It noted that Security Council resolutions affirm that a solution must be consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, acceptable to both parties, and ensure the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.
The statement further stressed that Western Sahara remains on the agenda of the UN General Assembly and its relevant bodies as a decolonization issue, reaffirming that the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence is a “firm and inalienable right that cannot be subject to compromise or bargaining.”
The Sahrawi Government also considered Morocco’s announcement of its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the 2028–2029 term to be inconsistent with the responsibilities and principles of the UN body entrusted with maintaining international peace and security.
The Sahrawi Government reaffirmed the Sahrawi people’s commitment to their right to self-determination and independence, and to continuing their struggle for freedom, independence, and the restoration of sovereignty over the entire territory of the Sahrawi Republic.
