New York (United Nations), 23 September 2026 (SPS) – H.E. João Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola, received today, Wednesday, with Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, on the sidelines of the high-level general debate of the 81st ordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly, which began Tuesday.
During the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs conveyed to the Angolan President the warm greetings of the President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, expressing the Sahrawi people's appreciation for Angola's historic position on the Sahrawi cause. The meeting also addressed the latest developments concerning the national cause and included an exchange of views on other issues of common interest.
For his part, the Angolan President reaffirmed his country's support for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence, in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union. He also recalled the strong historical relations between the two countries, which have been based for decades on friendship, solidarity and cooperation.
The Sahrawi side was represented at the meeting by Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat, Polisario Front Representative to the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, and Mr. Malainin Salama, Adviser at the Polisario Front's Mission to the United Nations.
The Angolan side was represented by Mr. Tete António, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola, and Mr. Victor Lima, Minister of State for Diplomatic and International Cooperation in the Office of the President of the Republic.
