Luanda (Angola), August 30, 2026 (SPS) – President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, stressed the need to activate existing mechanisms and provide them with the means and powers necessary to resolve conflicts across the continent.
In his speech during the 21st Extraordinary Summit of the African Union, dedicated to examining ways to strengthen mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts in Africa, President Brahim Ghali commended the important progress made by the African Union in building a continental peace and security architecture.
He pointed out that the real challenge is no longer to create more mechanisms, but rather to activate those already in place and equip them with the necessary means and powers so that they can intervene in a timely manner and with the required effectiveness.
The President added that the choice of Luanda to host this extraordinary session carries particular significance, given the history of struggle of the sister Republic of Angola and its experience not only in overcoming conflict and building peace and national reconciliation, but also because of the prominent role that President João Lourenço has continued to play in peacebuilding on the continent, as well as his commendable efforts to de-escalate tensions and defuse conflict hotspots.
President Brahim Ghali saluted the African Union and its Commission, the Peace and Security Council, and all AU structures concerned with peace and security for the efforts they are making to strengthen the continent’s capacity to prevent and resolve conflicts and build peace.
