Boumerdes (Algeria), August 12, 2026 (SPS) – Professor of Political Science and International Relations, Mr. Karim Regouli, affirmed that Sahrawi diplomacy has waged major political and human rights battles over the decades and achieved significant gains that have helped consolidate the presence of the Sahrawi cause in various international and regional forums.
This came during a lecture he delivered today, Wednesday, as part of the activities of the Summer University for Executives of the Sahrawi Republic and the Polisario Front, entitled “The Role of Sahrawi Diplomacy in Advocacy and Exposing Human Rights Violations.” The lecturer reviewed the main challenges facing the Sahrawi cause and the diplomatic efforts undertaken to shed light on human rights violations committed by the Moroccan occupation in the occupied parts of Western Sahara.
The Algerian academic addressed the repressive practices pursued by the Moroccan occupation authorities against the Sahrawi people, including preventing international observers from accessing the occupied territories, expelling foreign delegations, and imposing restrictions on freedom of expression and assembly, in addition to arrests and unfair trials.
Regouli clarified that Moroccan violations are not limited to the human rights, but also extend to the social and economic fields through the plundering and exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources and the deprivation of the Sahrawi people of the benefits of their country’s wealth. He stressed that these practices constitute part of a systematic policy aimed at imposing a fait accompli, erasing the identity of the Sahrawi people, and obstructing their right to self-determination.
In reviewing the trajectory of Sahrawi diplomacy, the lecturer noted that advocacy efforts for the Sahrawi people’s rights have continued for decades. Throughout this period, the Sahrawi Republic and the Polisario Front have engaged in continuous diplomatic battles since the establishment of the Sahrawi Republic, contributing to keeping the Sahrawi cause on the agenda of international and regional bodies.
In this context, the Algerian academic highlighted the Sahrawi Republic’s membership in the African Union, as a founding member, and its participation in the Union’s structures, particularly the African Peace and Security Council, considering this presence an important achievement for Sahrawi diplomacy.
