Kingston (Jamaica), 21 July 2026 (SPS) – The Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) to Latin America and the Caribbean, Mohamed Zroug, has concluded an intensive working visit to Jamaica, marked by meetings with media representatives, political leaders, anti-colonial organizations, Pan-African movements, and prominent members of civil society, aimed at strengthening awareness and support for the just cause of the Sahrawi people.
During the visit, the Sahrawi diplomat met with journalists from the print media, radio, and television, providing an update on the developments in the Western Sahara conflict and presenting the official position of the Sahrawi Government regarding the United Nations-led decolonization process.
Throughout these meetings, Mohamed Zroug denounced the worsening human rights situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara and the continued violations of international humanitarian law committed by the Moroccan occupying authorities. He also devoted particular attention to the situation of Sahrawi political prisoners, especially the case of Naâma Asfari and his fellow members of the Gdeim Izik Group, recalling the repeated calls by international human rights mechanisms to put an end to the violations of their fundamental rights.
The agenda also included meetings with organizations committed to anti-colonial struggles, Pan-Africanism, and international solidarity, as well as with prominent Jamaican political leaders. Discussions focused on the continued relevance of the right of peoples to self-determination and the urgent need to complete the decolonization of Western Sahara, the last colony in Africa.
The interlocutors reaffirmed the importance of the countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) continuing to uphold the principles of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, and the relevant resolutions of both the United Nations and the African Union, thereby contributing to a just, democratic, peaceful, and lasting solution that will enable the Sahrawi people to freely exercise their right to self-determination and independence.
The visit forms part of the Sahrawi diplomatic strategy to consolidate relations with Caribbean countries, strengthen ties with solidarity movements, and expand media coverage of the Sahrawi cause in a region that has historically remained committed to the principles of decolonization, international justice, and the freedom of peoples.
