International conference in Ireland on Sahrawi people and its right to self-determination

Cork (Ireland), May 22, 2026 (SPS) – University College Cork in Ireland is hosting today, Friday, an international conference entitled “The Forgotten People of Western Sahara,” organized by the Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, to commemorate 50 years since the occupation of Western Sahara.

The conference aims to shed light on the suffering of the Sahrawi people, whose cause remains on the United Nations list of decolonization issues, while also highlighting the urgent need to find a just solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.

Researchers, writers, artists, and filmmakers from several countries are participating in this academic and cultural event. Discussions will address the political, humanitarian, and cultural dimensions of the Sahrawi issue, in addition to celebrating the rich Sahrawi cultural heritage.
