Shaheed El Hafed (Sahrawi Refugee Camps), 21 May 2026 (SPS) – A delegation from the African Union Commission (AUC) specializing in mine action attended on Wednesday morning a simulation exercise for a minefield clearance operation, organized by the Sahrawi Mine Action Coordination Office (SMACO), with the participation of a team of Sahrawi male and female experts in the field.

The exercise simulated the protocol followed by SMACO in mine clearance and demining operations. Sahrawi experts gave the AUC delegation a detailed presentation on the procedures undertaken by the office and its teams when receiving reports of a landmine explosion or explosive remnants of war in any area of the Sahrawi Republic.

In this context, the AUC delegation was able to gain practical insight into the working methods of the Sahrawi demining teams, which include groups of experienced Sahrawi women participating in mine clearance operations.

It is worth noting that the African delegation specializing in mines and explosive remnants of war carried out a technical visit to the Sahrawi Republic to review the Sahrawi program related to mine action and demining efforts. During the visit, the delegation toured the headquarters of several organizations operating in the field, in addition to the Sahrawi Mine Action Coordination Office (SMACO).
