Basque Region (Spain), February 20, 2026 (SPS) – Spanish political parties continue to support the Sahrawi cause and stand by the Sahrawi people in their struggle for their legitimate rights.

The Basque Nationalist Party, in cooperation with the Basque left-wing coalition (EH Bildu), has submitted a draft resolution affirming the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

The draft resolution, agreed upon by the two parties and introduced within the framework of the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (February 27, 1976), reaffirms that the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination is recognized by the United Nations, and that the territory of Western Sahara, half a century later, “remains a non-self-governing territory whose decolonization process has not yet been completed.”

The proposal, which will be put to a vote at the general assembly of the Basque Nationalist Party, also calls on Morocco to “immediately end its illegal presence” in Western Sahara.

The draft further stresses that the Spanish authorities (the former colonial power) must “strictly” commit to “non-cooperation” with Morocco in serious violations of international law, pointing to Spain’s political and moral responsibility toward the occupied territory.

In a related context, members of the Socialist Party in the Parliament of Navarre are participating in events supporting the Sahrawi cause. This weekend, the Parliament is hosting the 29th Conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Groups “Peace and Freedom in Western Sahara.”
