Occupied El Aaiun, 11 December 2025 (SPS) – Moroccan occupation forces, both in uniform and in civilian clothing, violently intervened on Wednesday against a group of Sahrawi human rights defenders during their participation in a peaceful sit-in organized on Smara Street in the occupied city of El Aaiun.

The sit-in was held to commemorate International Human Rights Day and had been called for by the Coordination Mechanism for Activist Action in Western Sahara – El Aaiun Branch.

The demonstrators raised Sahrawi national flags and photos of civilian prisoners, along with banners and slogans denouncing the recent agreement between the European Commission and the Moroccan occupation, which included the territory of Western Sahara in clear violation of international law and the rulings of the European Court of Justice.

During this violent intervention, several Sahrawi defenders were directly assaulted.

In addition, the Moroccan forces chased a number of activists and prevented them from reaching the site of the peaceful gathering.

It is worth noting that Moroccan repressive agencies had imposed, two days earlier, a tight blockade on several neighborhoods in occupied El Aaiun, while intensifying surveillance on the homes of several Sahrawi activists, in a clear attempt to prevent any protest action or peaceful field activity through which the Sahrawi people express their aspirations and legitimate demands for dignity, freedom, and independence.
