Occupied El Aaiun, September 27, 2025 (SPS) - In a serious escalation of repressive policies and violations of fundamental freedoms, Sahrawi human rights defender Laroussi Faghir, the Secretary-General of the Association for the Monitoring of Wealth and Protection of the Environment in Western Sahara (AREN), was violently assaulted Friday by plainclothes agents of the Moroccan occupation police in the Layrac neighborhood of occupied El Aaiun.

The assault resulted in bruises and the breaking of his prescription glasses.

This attack occurred simultaneously with Moroccan occupation forces besieging the home of human rights defender Sidi Mohammed Daddach, president of CODAPSO (Committee for the Defense of the right to self-determination for the people of Western Sahara), alongside human rights defender Embarkat Abdelkrim, Director of the October 12th Media Platform, and a number of other Sahrawi activists and members of the Coordination Mechanism for Militant Action in occupied El Aaiun. The group had intended to hold a peaceful meeting.
