Boumerdès, August 7, 2025 (SPS) – Sahrawi writer and journalist Hamma El Mahdi affirmed on Thursday that Moroccan propaganda systematically distorts facts in Western Sahara to mislead international public opinion about a territory internationally recognized as under colonial occupation.
During a lecture titled "Modern Communication Techniques to Counter Moroccan Propaganda Campaigns" at the Summer University for Polisario Front and Sahrawi State executives in Boumerdès, Algeria, Professor Hamma El Mahdi emphasized that "the Moroccan regime employs propaganda campaigns and psychological warfare to falsify realities and promote its colonial agenda in Western Sahara."
The speaker stressed that modern communication technologies have become essential tools in countering propaganda campaigns that exploit digital and interactive media to advance Morocco's colonial claims in Western Sahara. He called for developing effective strategies to confront such disinformation operations.
Professor Hamma El Mahdi analyzed the methods of psychological and information warfare waged through social media platforms, where Morocco's propaganda machinery systematically deploys rumors and fabricated news stories to manipulate Sahrawi public opinion.
He underscored the urgent need to monitor all propaganda campaigns, respond promptly with factual counter-narratives, and develop comprehensive programs to attract skilled media and cultural professionals.
The lecture highlighted how Morocco's disinformation strategy aims to create an artificial reality about Western Sahara, requiring coordinated Sahrawi media efforts to expose these tactics through fact-based journalism and strategic digital engagement.
