New York, 22 October 2026 (SPS) – Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front, its representative to the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO, stated on Thursday evening, in remarks on the latest draft UN Security Council resolution on Western Sahara, that the ball is now in the Security Council’s court to save the peace process in Western Sahara.
He particularly highlighted the responsibility of the so-called penholder, which, he said, appeared to have involved the occupying state in drafting the latest Security Council resolution this time.
He stressed that saving the peace process requires a return to the proper path on which it was originally founded and which underpins the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). This path is the UN-African settlement plan, accepted by both parties to the conflict, the Polisario Front and the Moroccan occupying state, which provides for enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to independence and freely choose their future.
Sidi Mohamed Omar reiterated the Polisario Front’s categorical rejection of any predetermined framework that dictates the outcome of the process, reaffirming its commitment to the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.
The Sahrawi diplomat called on the Security Council to assume its fundamental responsibility, in accordance with the UN Charter, for maintaining international peace and security. He stressed that any attempt to legitimise the occupation of territory by force would only lead to further tension and instability, not only in the region but also in other parts of the world.
