New York (United Nations), 11 October 2026 (SPS) – Mozambique has reaffirmed its support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, stressing the need to hold the referendum that the people of Western Sahara have been awaiting since 1990 and urging the United Nations system to address the decolonisation of the territory with the urgency it requires.

Mozambique’s position was expressed during discussions before the United Nations General Assembly’s Fourth Committee, which deals with Special Political and Decolonisation matters. The Mozambican representative stressed that Western Sahara continues to await the promised self-determination referendum, despite the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy and the various United Nations mechanisms.

The representative underscored that the entire United Nations system, including the Security Council, the General Assembly and other relevant bodies, must address outstanding decolonisation issues with the urgency they deserve, citing Western Sahara as a clear example of the need to complete the decolonisation process.

He also expressed regret over the persistence of situations that, in his words, are inconsistent with the “post-colonial order” envisaged by the United Nations Charter.
