Copenhagen, September 30, 2026 (SPS) – The Danish United Nations Association organized a Nordic conference on Western Sahara on Tuesday at the Danish Parliament in Copenhagen, bringing together participants from Denmark, Sweden and Norway, alongside a Sahrawi delegation.
The conference addressed the legal and political dimensions of the Western Sahara issue, with speakers stressing the importance of respecting the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and completing the decolonization process.
Speakers included Danish parliamentarian Trine Pertou Mach, former UN Secretary-General’s Personal Representative, former MINURSO Force Commander Major General Kurt Mosgaard, University of Copenhagen international law professor Astrid Kjeldgaard-Pedersen, former Danish Foreign Minister Mogens Lykketoft, and Eric Hagen of the Norwegian Support Committee for Western Sahara.
The speakers highlighted the UN framework for Western Sahara, the role of MINURSO, and the international legal obligations concerning the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. Several participants also raised concerns over the exploitation of Western Sahara’s natural resources and called for greater respect for international law.
